Children’s individuality will be nurtured and celebrated by having Educators build meaningful and respectful relationships with each child in their care. Deep relationships allow Educators to understand and support familial, cultural, and social practices that support a strong image of the child as a mighty learner and citizen.
The Alberta Curriculum Framework (Flight) builds on Early Learning and Child Care frameworks that have been developed around the world. It applies foundational knowledge and understanding of how children learn and develop assisting Educators in making meaningful curriculum decisions. Dream Start Daycare has chosen this curriculum model as an inspiration within an emergent and learning-through-play process.
Children’s development, strengths, experiences, needs, schemas, dispositions and interests are observed and documented by Educators and used as key ingredients for provocations and co-learning activities. Toys and materials are used as the tools to enhance and emerge these observations to generate further opportunities and inquiries of the child’s interest. Educators will share observations and activities with parents through displays, Parent/Educator meetings, and general discussions.
Developmental areas including motor skills (large and small muscles), language, intellectual, creative, social, and emotional are considered in the program of activities. Literacy is a component found throughout the children’s environment, with efforts to include each child’s home language. Children become information seekers, curious explorers, sensory inquirers, and socializers through the space and opportunities while Educators will be co-learners, co-facilitators, co-explorers and inquirers.
Opportunities for physical play will be provided throughout the day, indoors and outdoors, to compliment a child’s need for sedentary moments.
